TU Varna

The Technical University of Varna (TUV) was founded in 1962 by a Decree of the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria and Act of the National Assembly. It operates passive buildings’ fund with total space of 200 000 square metres land and 120 000 square metres buildings area . During the 2012/2013 academic year the total number of students at the University amounted to 7000 full time students, more than 1000 part time students and about 400 foreign students. The number of Ph.D. students was around 120.

Training is provided by 316 lecturers, 119 of them are Professors and the rest are Assistant professors.




Academic Degrees

According to the new structure of the curriculum the process of study is conducted in four academic degrees: Specialist, B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. A university degree is awarded to a student when she or he has completed a programme comprising the number of years of study established by law and when he or she has successfully passed the required examinations. For Bachelors the study programme is with a duration of 4 years (8 semesters). The duration for a Master degree takes 1-1,5 years after the Bachelor Degree. The PhD degree takes minimum 3 years.

The international activities of the University follow the programs financed by the European community, such as: TEMPUS, COPERNICUS, CEEPUS, LLP, ERASMUS, LEONARDO DA VINCI, GRUNDTVIG, MINERVA, PHARE, FP5, FP6 etc.
Harmonization of the study plans with the appropriate European universities resolves the problems with the ECTS introduction, allows mutual recognition of diplomas and finally increases the mobility of the students.

Accommodation

Accommodation

Technical University of Varna provides accommodation with regard to Erasmus students’ financial means. For those who prefer accommodation in students’ halls of residence double rooms are offered, each with its own bathroom. A bed in a double room costs about 36 EUR (70 BGL) per month, electricity and water supply charges are not included.
Students may also rent private lodgings. The price of private apartments usually amounts to at least 150 EUR (for an apartment that can be shared with another student) to 350 EUR (for an apartment for four students).

Food

The Students’ canteen offers cooked meals at low prices. There are small restaurants and cafeterias as well as fast food places, where you can have a proper meal for as much as 6 leva (3 EUR).
There are also snack bars serving breakfast and drinks in each one of the University buildings. Supermarkets are open from 8.00 to 21.00. There are a lot of shops open 24 hours. The various catering establishments in the town of Varna are able to satisfy the various tastes and needs of its visitors. Along with local specialties you can also find Italian, Indian, Chinese food.

A large and modern sports complex is at the disposal of the students. Sport teams represent the Technical University of Varna in student’s competitions.

National system of education

The start of the democratic changes in Bulgaria created conditions for the development of a new model of higher education. The adoption of the new Act on higher education and all its amendments as well as the inclusion of the country in the European system of higher education through the signing of the Bologna declaration, caused certain changes in the national system of higher education, mainly relating to:


      Creation of a real academic autonomy
      No ideology yin the study curriculum
      Introduction of the three level system” of education
      Transformation of the two and three years educational institutions into colleges
      Introduction of a system for accreditation and evaluation of the higher education
      Engine room simulator
      Firefighting/Disasters simulator

The higher educational system provides academic tuition leading to the following degrees:


      Bachelor’s degree is awarded after completion of a study programme lasting at least 4 years with minimum 240 ECTS credits accumulated;
      Study programmes lasting at least 5 years lead to the Master’s degree.
      Alternatively, the Master’s degree can be obtained by attending a one or two-year study programme following the Bachelor’s degree;
      The PhD degree is awarded after completion of a study programme following the Master’s degree with a duration of at least 3 years

      Firefighting/Disasters simulator

Students’ knowledge is mainly evaluated by written examinations as specified in the curricula. The evaluation is based on a six-point grading system with 6 being the highest grade point. The mark 1 is not used. A grade point of at least 3 must be achieved in order to pass an examination.
